The CMS grant will establish the ACCESS stroke telemedicine network. Inexpensive audiovisual equipment and software will enable specialists at UNMH to provide emergency neurological and neurosurgical consultation for patients at 30 New Mexico hospitals to identify the stroke patients - up to 40 percent - who do not require neurosurgery and can receive immediate local treatment, making transport to UNMH unnecessary. This will improve patient outcomes and save millions of dollars each year.
