Liu received his B.S. degree from Peking University, China (1982) and his PhD from the University of Leeds, England (1988). Following his postdoctoral training at University of Notre Dame and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he worked as a research faculty at Dartmouth Medical School for a number of years before moving to UNM.
