Burchiel, Scott Professor

Burchiel received a BS in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis, in 1973 and a PhD in pharmacology from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1977. He was a postdoctoral fellow at UNM School of Medicine’s Immunology Laboratory before joining the College of Pharmacy.
Research Interests
Burchiel is an expert in immunotoxicology and environmental carcinogenesis. He has written more than 125 scientific manuscripts and has been continually funded by the NIH for more than 25 years. He is an active NIH reviewer and is an Editor in Chief of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology. His research focuses on the effects of environmental agents on the immune system of humans and animal models, gene-environment interactions and epigenetics of immune suppression. Burchiel’s laboratory is known for its use of flow cytometry to study immune cell phenotyping and function, as well as signaling and cell injury pathways. Current studies focus on environmental public health issues in populations exposed to arsenic.
