The New Mexico Camp for Kids with Diabetes provides children with diabetes a safe environment to have fun while learning vital skills for managing their disease. In addition to swimming, playing games, and sleeping in bunk beds, the children also learn how to count carbohydrates at meals, adjust their diet and insulin dosage and give their own insulin injections. Dr. Burge, a type 1 diabetic, began volunteering at the camp when he moved to UNM as an endocrinology fellow in 1991.
