Dr.Mertz is Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine and Former Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases. He received his MD degree from Rush Medical College and completed residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases from the University of Washington in Seattle. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. His clinical and research interests include hantavirus and herpesvirus infections, HIV/AIDS and general infectious diseases. Since 1999, Dr. Mertz has been the principal investigator of a NIH/NIAID-sponsored research grant, which is focused on hantavirus infections in central and southern Chile.
