Our cerebrovascular research project focuses on the brain vascular malformations caused by a genetic mutation in the CCM1 gene, known as the common Hispanic mutation. We have a large patient population in New Mexico, and have established a large database with clinical, imaging, and genetic information as we search for causes of disease variability. We have a clinical trial studying simvastatin as a way to reduce permeability of CCM lesions as measured by DCE-MRI.
Our pediatric and adult neuromuscular projects include the For-DMD international study of corticosteroid treatment in Duchenne Muscular Dystophy, and our ongoing project in Myotonic Dystrophy 1 looking at brain function.
