As a native of upstate New York, I began my world travels with a semester in Tanzania and a summer in Costa Rica. Upon graduation, I returned to East Africa and Central America for field research and volunteered in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. These experiences led me to the unique opportunity to study medicine in Cuba. I was among a small group of Americans offered a full-scholarship to the Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM), an international program for students dedicated to providing primary care to the underserved. During my training, I participated in the Brigada Estudantil de Salud (BES) organizing community health awareness in Peru and the Henry Reeve Brigade of Cuban Doctors responding to the earthquake in Haiti. After graduation, I volunteered for Adventist Health International (AHI) in Liberia for the Ebola response. I have a passion for social justice, international medicine, disaster relief, and providing quality healthcare to the underserved. The UNM Northern New Mexico Program is an attractive combination of university-based and full-spectrum training that will allow me to serve communities in need, both in the US and internationally.
