Dr. Rowland has been studying the epidemiology of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) since 1998 when he began the Johnston County ADHD study.  His research is about the prevalence and risk factors of ADHD and how exposures during pregnancy and early life might increase the risk of ADHD.  Dr. Rowland conducted a NIH R01 funded follow-up study of 1160 youth with ADHD from 2005-2010.  Dr. Rowland has also collaborated on research about the risk of Parkinson disease and other neurologic diseases among the Navajo, and on concussion rates among New Mexico middle and high school athletes.  He has been collaborating with the New Mexico Department of Health on their Toddler mental health and development study and has been working on how to improve diabetes care in UNM primary care clinics.  

Dr. Rowland teaches Perinatal Epidemiology, and Developmental Epidemiology (children’s mental health) in the MPH program and Introduction to Population Health and Population Health Research Methods in the undergraduate program. Based on his interest in engaged and active learning, Dr. Rowland was selected to be part of the UNM Provost’s Scholar program where he is working with other educators to make the teaching of research skills more accessible to all students.   He is a co-investigator on a recently awarded Student Experience Project grant from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).
