My philosophy of teaching places the professor in the role of guide and facilitator. I believe that teaching is not about delivering information or lecturing to students while they passively wait to receive my knowledge. I consider myself a facilitator who encourages intellectual growth and independent thinking. I always try to create an environment that promotes learning and well being. The constructivist approaches I take emphasize collaboration and exchange of ideas. Evaluation is not based on testing, but rather on contributions, group projects, and on whether the student is able to demonstrate that his/her conception of the topic of study has evolved over the course of the semester.
I have been teaching for 25 years in a variety of academic and educational settings, including public health programs, a school of public health, a college of education, and a college of population health. I have also delivered professional and graduate level courses in Mexico and Spain.
