Dr. Schiff is Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine in the UNM School of Medicine and a core faculty member of the UNM Prevention Research Center and the Preventive medicine Residency Program. Her primary areas of research are reproductive and perinatal epidemiology and injury epidemiology. A primary focus of her research is in the area of maternal health and injury and she has utilized birth certificate and hospitalization databases to evaluate a variety of mechanisms of injury including motor vehicle crashes, falls and suicide as well as the effects of trauma systems on pregnancy outcomes.
She has collaborated with investigators at the University of Washington on pregnancy outcomes among women with disabilities such as hearing impairment, spinal cord injuries and intellectual disabilities.
Another focus of her research is in the area of sports injuries including those related to soccer and concussions in athletes.
She is currently working on projects in New Mexico related to drowning fatalities, maternal mortality and morbidity, opioid use in pregnancy and the effects of school policies related to sexual and gender minority youth and violence outcomes such as bullying. She also serves as a research mentor for residents and graduate students.
