Dr. Wiggins is Director and Principal Investigator for the New Mexico Tumor Registry.  He has over 30 years of experience in cancer surveillance and epidemiology and has a strong interest in cancer among underserved populations.  Dr. Wiggins has characterized cancer incidence and mortality rates for American Indian populations in the United States.  He has also examined issues that impact cancer surveillance among American Indian communities, including misclassification of American Indians as non-Indian in central cancer registries.  Dr. Wiggins current projects include: 1.) Characterizing temporal patterns of cancer incidence in New Mexico’s American Indian and Hispanic populations over the last three decades; 2.) Documenting trends in cancer survival in Southwestern American Indians; and 3.) Documenting changing patterns of gastric cancer, both in New Mexico and in the United States.  He has been a member of the National Network for Cancer Control Research for American Indian and Alaska Native Populations since 1994.  Dr. Wiggins also coordinates instruction in epidemiology and biostatistics for medical students at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and serves as a research mentor to both medical and graduate students.
